TB programme set to reconstruct community structures in Likoma

Director for Health Social Services (DHSS) for Likoma, Gracewell Mathewe has said the reconstruction of community structures are vital in early detection of Tuberculosis (TB) cases.

He said this Tuesday in Likoma during the launch of 2021-2023 community TB programme in the district with supported by Global Fund.

Mathewe added that community structures help to control the spread of the disease through early detection by regularly monitor situations within their areas.

He underscored the importance of saying it would help to revamp community structures and control the spread of the disease.

Mathewe said the Community TB programme would specifically train volunteers carrying out various activities at grassroots level such as TB screening, testing, referring TB cases to the hospital for treatment and monitoring TB treament in the district.

“Currently, we have detected six clients of TB disease in the district through our managing volunteers. We hope that through the launched community TB programme will be able to detect more cases and treat them in time. 

“We believed through the previous data collection of TB cases in the district which is being submitted to ministry of health has made Likoma to be granted TB program in order to reduce the transmission of TB on the island,” the DHSS said.

The Programme Coordinator for Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights, Williot Joaquim Lumber said the national programme was designed by government in the Global Fund concept of 2021 to control the spread of TB in the community.

“This is a community based programme aiming at controlling the spread of TB in the communities and controlling other diseases related to TB and at the same time we are reducing morbidity and mortality rate,” he said.

The Coordinator said among others, the programme would work with the community split up action point to improve cases identification and to make sure people are getting tested and treated accordingly.
