The Malawi Under17 men’s team dreams of qualifying for 2021 Africa Cup of Nations have been dented after suffering a 7-1 defeat in the hands Angola.
The Declerk Msakakuona’s team has set a frustrating record at the ongoing Cosafa tournament after conceding 15 goals in just three matches.
Junior Flames kickstarted their campaign last Sunday with a 2-2 draw against the host before their 6-2 defeat to Zambia on Tuesday.
Malawi were hopeful of beating Angola and became a second team to book a place in next years Africa Youth Championship but they have squandered a chance to go through following their humiliation.
Vicente Domingos opened the floodgates on 29 minutes of the match before Custodio Hequele’s brace put Angola three up before half time.
Hequele completed his hattrick with a 66th minute strike. Malawi pulled one back through Samson Zakeyu 10 minutes before full time but Armindo Canji increased the score line two minutes later. Alexander Cacao and Osvaldo Inga finished the party with goals on 91st and 94th minutes.
Reacting to the defeat, junior flames Coach Declerk Msakakuona said they have lost because his boys were second on the ball.
“it’s sad that we have lost the match, we planned for a win but my boys were too slow on the ball they failed to match the pace of our opponents that’s the main reason for our loss”
We will meet them again on Sunday for a third-place battle so we will be working on our weakness and I hope we will finish with a win” said Nsakakuona.
Malawi have a single point from three games following their 2-2 draw with South Africa on the opening day of the tournament, before their 6-2 humiliation in the hands of Zambia.
