Salima MP endorses Chakwera’s 2025 candidature

By Staff Writer:

What was supposed to be a State function for President Lazarus Chakwera to commission a Solar Powered power plant on Tuesday to enhance Electricity Generation in the country turned political.

Taking to the podium to welcome Chakwera in his constituency, while praising the President’s ‘visionary leadership’, Salima Central Member of Parliament Gerald Phiri endorsed the country’s leader as Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) 2025 presidential elections.

“Mr State President let me remind you that Salima is the only district that has all Malawi Congress Party-MCP MPs. We don’t entertain nonsense here. Cadet has no space in Salima. This your home. Bwana look at these people here they are languishing in poverty and it’s my prayer that the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) loans should extend to these people. May you please sanitize the NEEF secretariat so that these people you are seeing here can start benefiting from these NEEF loans.

“At the rate we are progressing in this country I don’t see the reason why you your Excellency should not lead us up to 2030 people love you your Excellency,” said a visibly excited Phiri attracting jeers from party faithful clad in party cloth.

The MP further advised Chakwera to deal away with all people within the government system that are working towards frustrating government’s development agenda.

Chakwera’s ascendancy to power was supported by eight other parties who formed a working relationship under the Tonse Alliance towards 2020 fresh Presidential Elections.

His Vice President Saulos Chilima comes from the second biggest party in the Tonse Alliance, UTM.

Since the agreement between Chakwera and Chilima is yet to be made public, questions have been raised as to who will lead the alliance in 2025.
