By Chancy Namadzunda:
Activist Rev MacDonald Sembeleka has apologized to Former Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Dr Ben Phiri for remarks he made that the latter has been involved in unlawful activities.
On the August 15, 2019, during the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) press briefing, Reverend Sembereka alleged that Phiri and others sponsor thugs involved in unlawful activities.
He further said that Phiri, a Thyolo Central Legislator, was involved and sponsored the petrol bombing that occurred at the Residence of Minister of Civic Education and National Unity (MoCENU) Timothy Mtambo.
Mtambo was HRDC Chairperson then.
“I further stated that he is a murderer, a thief and will do anything to try to stick to power because they want to continue looting this country and perpetrate violence among Malawians.
“These allegations were uncalled for, untrue and defamatory to Dr. Ben Phiri. It is in view of this that I would like to retract the said allegations and issue a public apology to Dr. Ben Phiri for the false allegations that I made against him.
“It is my hope that this apology will be accepted by Dr. Ben Phiri and all those concerned,” said Sembeleka in a Statement which The Atlas Malawi has seen.
