Power scuffles between Tonse Alliance main partners Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM are reported to have delayed the release the reshuffle of the cabinet which President Lazarus Chakwera promised in February.
Why Malawians waited to fulfil his promise, it turned up to indicate the delay was because Chakwera was reviewing the submissions made by Vice President Saulos Chilima.
By implication, without Chilima’s submission, Chakwera would have already released the reshuffled cabinet.
However, reports within the system indicate there are disagreements on who should be in the new cabinet.
According to our sources, UTM wants to have a higher in the the reshuffled cabinet than the present cabinet which is dominated by MCP.
“Chilima has proposed that UTM fills up some key ministries which MCP is resisting. By March 31, the two camps had not agreed on the demands,” said the source.
According to Presidential Press Secretary Brian Banda, Chakwera failed to release the reshuffled cabinet because Chilima submitted assessment reports late.
Banda said that the review of the cabinet assessment report requires thorough analysis.
The delay to release Chakwera’s first ever cabinet was also due to disagreements between MCP and UTM on who should be included.,
