Government is to seize property belonging to former President Peter Mutharika’s personal bodyguard Norman Paulos Chisale worth K1.7 billion.
This follows a High Court order granted by Judge Mike Tembo.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Steve Kayuni through other law enforcement agencies jointly made an application to the court to have the assets seized.
Other agancies are assets forfeiture unit, the Financial Intelligence Authority ( FIA), Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), and Malawi Police Service (MPS) Fiscal and Fraud Department.
Chisale is answering to multiple cases like murder, attempted murder and is also involved in the cement-saga.
Malawi Police Services arrested Chisale, former State House Director Peter Mukhito, former Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) Deputy Commissioner General Roza Mbilizi and owner of Prestige Imports and Exports, Shafee Chunala in connection with a batch of cement worth about K5 billion (about $7 million) that was imported duty free using Mutharika’s tax-free status.
However, Mutharika said he learnt with shock that MRA approved the clearance of duty free cement using his taxpayer identification number (TPIN).
Personal secretary to the former president, Linda Salanjira said the former president neither bought nor instructed anyone to buy or import the cement in question.
She said Mutharika could not request the MRA to invoke any of his privileges to clear the alleged consignment of cement duty free.
The case was committed to the High Court for trial.
