Court orders CORI Manager Madivar to pay victim K700 000

Mzuzu Senior Resident Magistrate Godfrey Nyirenda has ordered convicted Capital Oil Refining Industry (CORI) Northern Region Manager Anand Madivar to compansate acitist Happy Mhango with K700,000.

The court convicted Madivar for calling Mhango a ‘dog’ in public.

Mhango is the Northern Region Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) chairperson.

Magistrate Nyirenda further sentenced the convict to three months imprisonment but suspended to three years.

The 32-year-old Indian national, Madivar, pleaded guilty to the charge of insulting a person.

Mzuzu police spokesperson, Paul Tembo said the incident happened at Kentam Mall in Mzuzu where the two were seeking services from a mobile phone operator.

Mhango said he was insulted by the suspect because he had questioned him why he was refusing to be on a queue.

CORI manufatures vegitable cooking oil from oil seeds called Kukoma.
