Court blocks sale of Reserve Bank of Malawi building

By Chikumbutso Phiri:

High Court Judge Ken Manda has blocked the sale of the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Mzuzu branch by a disgruntled contractor, David Chidyaonga of DDC Designs.

Chidyaonga wanted to sell the K18.4 billion building citing failure by the Central Bank to settle a contract bill for supervisory works he rendered during construction.

However, RBM applied for an injunction at the High Court restraining the contractor from selling the building.

On Wednesday, April 8, 2021, Justice Manda granted an injunction restraining Chidyaonga from proceeding with his plans saying his action is ‘not only misconceived but also vexatious.’

The court agreed with the bank that Chidyaonga was paid his dues in full and cannot claim royalties.

DCC Designs was a member of NDDC Consortium which was hired in 2006 to supervise construction of its Mzuzu Branch.
