As the country is experiencing rises of commodities due to an increase of fuel pump prices, the Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA) has called on government to put in place measures that will in the long run reduces fuel prices.

According to a statement signed by CAMA Executive Director John Kapito, the rising of fuel pump pricws has negative impact on consumers’ cost of living as prices of essential goods and services will drastically go up.

Kapito said government should share the burden of high cost of a living with consumers by among other ways reducing government top officials high and obscene fuel allowances.

“Government should reduce allowances for the Executive, Senior Government Officials, Judiciary and Parliament as this is the only way government can demonstrate that it is sharing the burden of the high fuel prices and its impact with ordinary poor Malawians,” said Kapito.

He further called on President Lazarus Chakwera, Vice President Saulos Chilima and the entire Cabinet to reduce their unnecessary travels both within and outside Malawi, saying sharing the burden or the high cost of living must be demonstrated by action and not words.

Kapito also requested government through the Ministry of Trade to put in place market inspection and monitoring systems to ensure that unscrupulous traders do not increase their prices unfairly and that the Ministry of Trade or its agencies should continuously publish price changes of essential goods and services through various media outlets
